Nelson Mandela became the first black president of South Africa in 1994, serving until 1999. A symbol of global peacemaking, he won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993. Nelson Mandela was born on July 18, 1918, in Mveso, Transkei, South Africa. He has three sisters and brothers. His father died in 1927 when he was nine. In 1937 he attended the Methodist College Healtown, which is about 250 kilometerss from his home. From a young age he fought for the rights of black poeple.
